“When Technology Meets Books

In the afternoon of May 30, the 1st session of "When Technology Meets Books" was held in the Music Hall. The event was organized by Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Press and Publication and Shanghai Publishing Association, and hosted by University of Shanghai for Science and Technology and Shanghai Century Publishing Group.   


Mr. Hu Guoqiang, President of Shanghai Publishing Association, and Mr. Liu Yaming, Deputy Director of Organization and Human Resource Department of Shanghai Century Publishing Group were invited to attend the event, and Mr. Cai Yonglian, Vice President of USST, Mr. Zhang Hua, Secretary of the Party Committee of the College of Communication and Art Design, Mr. Liu Wei, Secretary of USST Youth League Committee, Mr. Xu Lin, Deputy Director of the International Affairs Office, and more than 70 students and teachers attended the event.


Cai Yonglian extended a warm welcome to the book-talking group. She said that USST is famous for its science and technology, but the university attaches great importance to the cultivation of humanities for students. The theme of "When Technology Meets Books" is particularly appropriate for the first installment of the series of activities of "The Book-talking Group Enters USST". She hoped this event would lead a new trend of reading books on USST campus, and let the fragrance of books float all over the beautiful Hujiang Park.            


Hu Guoqiang said in his speech that he believed this event would provide rich imagination for exploring the innovation of mechanism to promote reading for all and deepen the cooperation of industry-education integration, and it would also help to create a strong atmosphere of "Shanghai of Books" and promote Shanghai to be in the forefront in publishing research and editorial talent cultivation.            


In the book-talking session, the editor-in-charge of "Science, Scientists and Scientist Spirit", Cheng Cheng of Shanghai Science and Technology Education Press, told the story behind the successful publication of "Interesting Stories in the Science World- Science, Scientists and Scientist Spirit" from planning to editing and processing, which made the students feel that it was not easy for a book to come out. Ying Zou, editor-in-charge of The Martian Chronicles and editor of Shanghai Translation Publishing House, shared the two representative short works in The Martian Chronicles and the deep meaning behind the stories.                   

In the debate session, students from the Thinking Club of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and the debating team from USST had a warm discussion on the topic of "Do you think AI creation is considered art?”. Both sides discussed the relationship between technology and art from multiple angles and levels. The judges made wonderful comments on the performance of the debaters and expressed their expectation that we can continue to collide with each other in reading and thinking in the future.


As a mysterious egg of the event, Academician Wang Pinxian, the author of "Science, Scientists and Scientist Spirit", made a video appearance, sharing his daily reading methods and insights, and encouraging everyone to read more and keep the habit of independent thinking at the same time.
